Youth Prevention Program

Filmmaking & Fitness

Student Video Presentation - May, 2018

Engagement & Exposure

The Youth Filmmaking & Fitness Program offers after-school enrichment by creating opportunities that facilitate the participants' engagement with each other and their surroundings. The program integrates exposure to the arts, digital technology, and exercise and nutrition to create a wholly interactive experience for the kids.

Healthy Minds & Bodies

The program collaborates with local gyms, restaurants, museums, and supermarkets to provide an immersive experience. Participants meet with a nutritionist, attend training sessions at Peter Welch’s Gym, and take field trips to various sites throughout the city, including: Rock Spot Climbing, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Temazcal Cantina, the Museum of Fine Arts, Whole Foods Market, and Northeastern University.

Tierney Screening - September, 2017

Building skills for the future

Students document their experiences throughout the program, creating video journals and short personal videos. Throughout the process, participants develop media literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills by analyzing aspects of their community and highlighting them in their videos. In addition to articulating prevention and health themes through this medium, they learn various filmmaking skills such as story development, writing, directing, interviewing, camera, sound, editing, and music composition.
